The challenge

Suboptimal perioperative quality metrics

Improving adherence to evidence-based perioperative practices is a shared priority across the US health system, and UTMB is all too familiar with those challenges. When Dr. Brian Masel, Quality Director and Chief of Pediatric Anesthesia at UTMB, set out to improve perioperative quality at scale, he found that the gaps in implementation weren’t due to a lack of evidence or effort.

While attempting to drive real-time improvements to key perioperative metrics, Dr. Masel realized that traditional retrospective performance reviews simply weren’t working. Without direct, individualized feedback, the clinicians at UTMB lacked the necessary visibility into their own compliance.

“The vision was [to] bring performance data directly into a platform where everyone was already working daily… making it front and center rather than buried in a separate system.”

- Dr. Brian Masel, Quality Director & Chief of Pediatric Anesthesia, UTMB Health

The solution

AI-enabled performance feedback

To overcome this challenge, UTMB deployed C8 Health’s AI-enabled performance feedback platform to support clinician engagement with perioperative quality metrics. Clinicians then had access to a suite of tools to improve compliance:

  • An in-app dashboard displaying individual and department level-compliance
  • In-app metric education with short explanations of how to comply with each metric
  • Links to local best practices
  • Twice-weekly individualized notifications tailored to each clinician’s performance trends
  • Monthly compliance analysis highlighting procedure types, locations, and services that significantly contributed to noncompliance

This made it significantly easier for Dr. Masel and the anesthesiology leadership team to evaluate changes in metrics like perioperative glucose testing, glucose management, antibiotic redosing, and other key metrics. UTMB also conducted a three-month evaluation comparing C8 users to non-C8 users.

The results

Sweeping compliance increases across the board

Three months after deploying C8 Health, Dr. Masel saw a 9.1% increase in perioperative glucose testing, 37.5% increase in glucose management, and slight boosts to every other metric the team was tracking. This raised the department’s overall projected compliance rate from 72.2% to 81.3%. Nearly 40% of previously noncompliant providers became compliant in this time period, and 96 providers per metric showed improvement.

“I am proud to say our department has hit every goal and achieved 100% of available incentives every quarter. This demonstrates that when you give people clear visibility into their performance and timely feedback paired with actionable guidance, they respond.”

- Dr. Brian Masel, Quality Director & Chief of Pediatric Anesthesia, UTMB Health
“C8 was already the center of our department’s daily workflow. Adding daily, provider‑level quality metrics into the same app has been invaluable for us...In just three months, we increased perioperative glucose management compliance from ~72% to more than 81%.”
